Nighttime, and Madrid is just getting started | Spain. By Mike Randolph -
July 3, 2013
[…] the Gran Via, on a cold winter’s night in Madrid. The same evening I took this image, I took this one a little earlier, while waiting for dusk. It stumped quite a few people. I wasn’t sure […]
I like these – we do this with food sometimes. Have been looking at it for 10 minutes and still can’t work it out. Pretty sure it’s northern, but Pyrenees or Picos? Quite big industrial city? Possibly Cantabria but maybe too far from the mountains. I’ll try my luck with Oviedo.
Thanks for your guess. It’s not Oviedo….
Segovia?
Thanks for your guess. It is not Segovia either.
Granada? It’s got some pretty filthy bits as well as its wonderful bits.
Thanks for the guess, but it is not Granada.
zargosa! just a wild stab in the dark…I’ve never been there, but I know how to spell it.
Nice guess Michelle, but this is not Zaragoza either….
Clues please….
Well, since I’ve limited the guesses to one per person, giving a clue now might be unfair to those who have already thrown their hats in the ring, so to speak. But what the hell, I’ll say this: Sarah was warm. And since it’s only fair, anyone who has already guessed can have one more try…
Ponferrada?
Sorry Laura. Cold (literally, in the case of Ponferrada!).
It does look a bit like Ponfe! I had the same thought, but doesn’t look quite like it.
Ok, had a quick look at a map. I know…cheating. How about Bejar. Looks like it is near some mountains. Haven’t been there though. Does it still count?
Avila?!
Jonathan: you didn’t cheat enough. Sarah is getting warmer…
Close but no cigar? Grrrr, let’s see… My last attempt: San Lorenzo de El Escorial?
Still no cigar, Sarah!
Hi Mike. This is tough one. My guess is Astorga… Any luck?
Nygil
Thanks for guessing, Nygil, but it’s not Astorga either. On Tuesday the contest closes and I’ll reveal the city. I think a lot of people will be very surprised! But I hope someone guesses it first. Sarah…any other ideas?
more clues please…. what would be a tipico tapa here?
Jamon. jejeje. Nice try Beth!
Oh man, I’m kicking myself!! Now I can see it… it’s the first city I ever visited in Spain, Madrid!! This is the Sierra de Guadarrama in the background, right?
Correct! Well done, Sarah! Yes, this is Madrid, taken from the observation deck on the Palacio de Cibeles (Correos building). It’s easy to forget how close the mountains are to Madrid because hardly anyone ever sees them from the city. But from the Palacio de Cibeles, right in the heart of the city, you get a good view of them. Sarah, send me an email (mike at randolphimages.com) and I’ll arrange to send you the print of your choice. Thanks to everyone who participated!
I’m delighted to have won! Thank you Mike, I can’t wait to choose a print and receive it, will send you an email now!
I knew it was Madrid! How I love our sierra–sneaky by just getting houses and no identifiable buildings. Let’s play another game!
Yeah, I guess it was a little sneaky! But hopefully that made it fun. I’ll be doing it again for sure, thanks Katie.
Madrid….my next guess for sure. haha
