Moments in Time

I’ve been spending a lot of time watching and photographing birds lately, just not enough. But I’m working on that.

On the surface of it, the two pastimes might seem pretty much the same, but as with most things, it gets more complicated the more you think about it. Watching birds in a purposeful way is a solitary pleasure even when you’re not alone. It’s like Zen but with binoculars–an appreciation of the fleeting moment, the now. A photograph, on the other hand, freezes the moment forever, or at least until your hard drive crashes, and unless you’re mysterious about it, the whole point of taking pictures is to share them with other people.

One is relaxing and peaceful. The other one can be frustrating, even infuriating, but also very rewarding as long as you stick it out long enough. I’m guessing you know which is which. They are of course related, but also completely different. Turns out I like them both.
