Modern Transformation

mercado-de-motoresIn the Retiro neighborhood of Madrid, the Nave de Motores hosts a mercadillo the first weekend of every month. Inaugurated by King Alfonso XIII, the Nave’s transformers and massive diesel motors provided electricity to Madrid’s Metro from 1923 until 1972. In late 2012, a flea market started up here, selling an eclectic variety of vintage and modern clothes, as well as trinkets, housewares and just about everything else you can imagine. It’s a lively scene, with more than one pop-up bar selling drinks and tapas, and there’s almost always a live band. Recently, the Mercado de Motores moved to Madrid’s train museum. Permanently? Does anybody know? Photo ©Mike Randolph

I LOVE this market. It is one of my favourite things to do on a Madrid weekend.

Gracias. There are actually all kinds of once-a-month markets in Madrid. Always on the first weekend, so plan accordingly…
