Here be Lots of Dragons

sa dragoneraThe island of Sa Dragonera, off the coast of Mallorca, almost became a mass-tourism resort after a private company bought it in 1974 and started developing plans for apartments, a hotel, a casino, and a large man-made port. But environmentalists fought back hard, and finally, ten years later, the island was designated a park and building on it was prohibited. Named for its dragon-like silhouette, the island is also home to thousands of mini dragons, aka, Podarcis lilfordi, a small lizard found nowhere else. The lighthouse at the eastern tip of the island has operated since 1910. Photo ©Mike Randolph

Happy this time common sense won and they couldn’t perpetrate the crime. Beautiful picture.

Thanks Marta. It’s a beautiful place to visit and walk around. There’s a charming little ferry that leaves from Sant Elm and as I recall, the price is something like 8 Euros. Well worth it, with spectacular views.

How interesting about the little dragons there. Do you have a picture? Also amazing is the shape of the island, maybe Nessie travelled to the Islands with all the British people that practically commute to the beautiful Baleares. Wonder why there are no recent sightings at Loch Ness.

Thanks for the posts, I enjoy them very much
