Approaching Maximum Density

Officials in Pamplona say that the crowds during the Fiesta de San Fermín reach maximum density when there are five people for every square meter. The crowd in this image of the opening day celebration looks as though it’s just about there. Photo ©Mike Randolph

Wish I was there right now! That’s a great shot that speaks volumes about the “San Fermines”. Do you have a link where one can see the daily running of the bulls?.

It is so interesting to see the culture differences when I go there, and when I see your photos and videos. Here they could never be pushed in like that for a million different safety codes.

But what really struck me is your amazing video of the human pyramids. These little kids climbing freaking way up high. And then descending down to their Mother’s arms for a hug and kiss. Can you imagine a North American Mom letting her little one even descend 5 stairs on their own??

Ha! Yeah, if you tried either of those things in North America you’d wind up in the clink!

    where were you shooting from?

    • Mike Randolph July 12, 2012 at 18:02 #

Thanks jmc and julvic. I was hanging out of a fifth-floor apartment window while a friend held on to me. He had had a few cañas by then, so I think it’s a good thing I didn’t slip. For the whole story, check out my feature article, Toro! by clicking on the link on the home page.
